About

“I am the representation.”

Calvin Milliner is a 2022 graduate of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. He received his master’s  degree in Magazine, News and Digital Journalism on the Sports Media and Communication Track. At Newhouse, Calvin wanted to take advantage of every opportunity the school had to offer. He interned at Sports Illustrated, where he covered the 2021 Syracuse football season. In addition to broadcasting live studio shows and providing insight on matchups through halftime reports and postgame analysis for ACC Network and Cuse.com. During spring break, Calvin traveled with his international reporting class to Israel, Palestine, Jordan and the Lebanese border. In doing so, Calvin was able to produce a story on the rescue of Ethiopian Jews through the lens of the pilots who brought them to Israel along with two photo essays showcasing the Middle East.

Calvin recently spent ten weeks in Arizona with News21, an investigative reporting fellowship based at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University. Each year, News21 focuses on a national topic of importance, and this year’s topic is police reform. Throughout his fellowship, he traveled to Oakland, Akron and Baltimore. He interviewed the Oakland Police Chief, LeRonne Armstrong, former Black Panther Leader, Elaine Brown, the mother of Oscar Grant, Wanda Johnson, Breonna Taylor’s aunt, Bianca Austin, Jacob Blake Sr., Senator Jill Carter, Marion Gray-Hopkins, and many more.

Born and raised in Harlem, New York, Calvin does not limit the kind of story he tells or how he tells it. He dedicated a significant portion of his life to pursuing professional football after playing both at the University of Rhode Island and Assumption College. His dreams were cut short when his pro day and CFL tryouts were canceled due to the pandemic. But  his support system and faith in God helped him focus on a new career path. Calvin is focused on being better than he was yesterday and building genuine relationships that last.
